The Left Behind

The Cruz de Ferro in Spain along the Camino

There are mixed views, as with anything, about leaving family behind to travel. I can easily argue with myself and say that I see their point, because I do. How can anyone decide to leave their children and spouse behind? However, here is my view:

1. I want my children to know, that even though you have children doesn’t mean you have to stop living your life. You don’t have to put your dreams on hold. Have your priorities straight, yes. You don’t have to put them on the back burner though until 20 years from now and wait until your youngest graduates high school. You can still go to college, which we are. You can still chase your dreams, and I am.

2. I am not abandoning them. 35-45 days may seem like a long time and it is. However, I am coming back. If, heaven forbid, I don’t, then there are plans and documents in place.

My main focus is that you don’t have to stop chasing your dreams, such as traveling, just because you have a family. Let them know that anything is possible. You only have this one life to live. That’s it. I mean, that’s it.

For me, this journey, is unexplainable. That is how powerful this “calling” is, if you will. If I had the money, I would walk out the door right now to catch a plane. I am ready to stand on mountains, fall to my knees at crosses, and find the answer to life that I am looking for, even though I don’t know the question yet. This journey only calls to certain people and I am lucky to be one of the pilgrims who’s soul it has called upon. Some people will never understand, and that is okay, as long as you support me, encourage me, and tell me to keep going, even if you disagree. I will let you walk your Camino, if you let me walk mine.

  1. Thank you for sharing this. I’ve got so much comments from people which were even not hearing to my arguments. I really cannot explain with words how strong this “calling” can be. Go for it, you will not be disapointed… and you will come back with something beautifull to share!
    Buen camino
